A Christian church has stood at the top of Bovey Tracey since Saxon times. Most of the present building was built in the 15th Century and it remains the oldest, biggest and most beautiful building in the town. Originally dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, St. Thomas of Canterbury was added by Henry de Tracy in reparation for the part played by Sir William de Tracy in the murder of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in his own cathedral.

Generations of Bovey people have maintained and adorned the building, so that it remains a place for Christian worship, and also a centre of community life. The church is open daily for visitors to view, sit quietly or pray. It provides a wonderful venue for concerts, exhibitions and plays. (photo © Bim Photography, Bovey Tracey. Used with permission)

The church hosts civic occasions such as Remembrance day and Carol services. Many families still mark the significant moments of birth, marriage and death in church.

Cost of ArmsThere is a War Memorial and a stained glass window in memory of those who fell in the first and second world wars. More recently the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee was marked with a new window in the west end, and the town banner and Coat of Arms are displayed in the church.

The regular congregation work hard to maintain the grounds and buildings, and give generously to maintain Christian ministry and keep the building in good order. They raise over £110,000 each year to meet these regular costs. The building is Grade 1 listed, which means that all repairs and improvements have to be done to the highest standards, which is expensive.

PPT rood screenWe believe that many people in the town and beyond want to see this presence continue for the future. The Friends of PPT is a way for people to help the congregation maintain the building.
